Program Summary

The certificate in Anglican studies is designed to serve the academic and formational requirements of students preparing for Anglican/Episcopal ministry, lay and especially ordained. Duke Divinity School students can earn their certificate in Anglican studies in one, two, or three years in conjunction with the MDiv (residential and hybrid), MTS, or ThM degrees.

    • PARISH 784 (1979 Book of Common Prayer and the Principles of Anglican Worship)

    • Anglican Studies Elective (complete any) - see list below

    • Anglican Spiritual Formation: Repeat CHURMIN 704 at least 4 times

    • Field Education in Epis/Anglican Setting 

    • Portfolio Review Middler with AEHS 

    • Portfolio Review Senior with AEHS

  • Anglican Studies for MTS 

    • PARISH 750A (The Anglican Tradition)

    • PARISH 784 (1979 Book of Common Prayer and the Principles of Anglican Worship)

    • Anglican Studies Elective (complete any) - see list below

    • Anglican Spiritual Formation: Repeat CHURMIN 704 at least 4 times

    • Advisory Meeting with AEHS

Other pre-approved electives may count; exception requests can be made to the certificate director.

Recommended timing of Anglican coursework:

MTS students - Anglican Tradition (PARISH 750A) in Fall of first year; Anglican Theology and BCP (PARISH 784/LTS 754) in Fall of second year. Electives can be taken any term.

Residential MDiv students - Anglican Theology and BCP (PARISH 784/LTS754) in Fall of first year; this course counts as the Church Ministry Limited Elective. Anglican Tradition (PARISH 750A) in Fall of second year; this course counts as the Practicing Theology in Ministry Limited Elective. Electives most likely taken in second and third years.

Hybrid MDiv students - Anglican certificate courses will be offered in most Summers. Students should plan to take in third and fourth years after core courses are completed.

THM students should work with their program director and Anglican house to consider the timing of coursework.
